Thanks for the above article. Question: my genealogical hard time is I am originally an O'Neill (O'Neal) raised and family spelling it O'Neill but everything I have found members use both versions. My G/G grandfather was my immigrant and from what I know he was from Northern Ireland in Armagh Parish and was born in 1865. Not much infor I know because of all the wars. My other part comes from a different line was changed when he arrived here as a prisoner after fighting in the Battle of Dunbar from MacLachlan to Claflin - he made the change not to hide but because no one could spell the name and there were about 14 different versions. My question is - do you have an suggestions in researching for either man? Been at it for over 20 years, found some things but the background info is tough. I did see there is a long time back link between the MacLachlan's and O'Neill's. If no suggestions that's ok, just thought I would try. The MacLachlan line is the one I truly concentrate on. My father (O'Neill was a jerk. Thanks in advance, Diane Kepus
